Her friends are campaigning for self-defence to be taught in schools and hopefully the government will find more funding for this.
Although we teach knife awareness and tips to survive a knife attack, it's possible that no amount of self-defence training would have helped Ellie. The killing was probably not premeditated as the knife was taken from her own kitchen. Ellie may have felt comfortable in her own home and unaware of the imminent danger. The attack was frenzied with 13 stab wounds to her neck, obviously hitting a major artery. If there were no signs of this young man's intent, it would have been near on impossible to stop his onslaught. We already teach the 'soft skills' of self-defence in some local secondary schools: situational awareness, de-escalation, avoidance, compliance, the law, reasonable force and intent as well as the physical aspect: basic escapes from grabs, pressure points and strikes.
Self-defence is a life skill that everyone should have the opportunity to learn.

With mental health issues on the increase in our society and more 'triggered' people, it's essential that anyone who deals with the public is taught about Awareness, Avoidance and De-escalation.

The tragic death of Harley Watson, a 12 year old boy mowed down by a car whilst walking home from school, has had a devastating impact on our community. Our children should be safe from harm but many parents are now worried about their children travelling to and from school. Here are our top 6 tips for your child’s personal safety:
1. When you’re in a public place, always be aware of your surroundings and people nearby. Try to avoid distractions which will make your reaction times slower, such as listening to music with earphones, talking, texting or browsing on your mobile phone.
2. When walking along the pavement, walk on the side nearest to oncoming traffic. These cars are closer and pose the most danger so your reaction times need to be quicker. Traffic travelling from behind would potentially have to drive across the road and through oncoming cars to reach you.
3. When faced with a much larger attacker or multiple attackers, immediate escape is obviously your first priority. If you can’t run then compliance (giving them what they want) and de-escalation (calming an aggressor) are your safest bets.
4. If this doesn’t work and violence is unavoidable, be aware of what you have to hand that can be of use to protect yourself. Everyday items such as bags, belts, drinks, keys, coins and clothing can be used to stall an attack giving you precious time to escape.
5. Regular training in martial arts improves your confidence. This oozes out of every pore when you walk, talk and breathe. Bad people like to pick on weak people. This is because they want easy victims and not to get hurt themselves. If you have confidence, bad people tend to avoid you.
6. Always report anything suspicious to your parents or the police. If bad people aren’t caught, they continue to do bad things.

Bruce Lee’s 7 Tips For Self Defence: Number 4 Is Genius Without doubt, Bruce Lee was perhaps the reason so millions of people fell in love with martial arts. After all, this skinny guy appeared to possess almost superhuman reflexes, phenomenal strength and martial arts skills that were far beyond anything seen on camera. In one of his earlier books The Tao of Gung Fu, Bruce wrote about self-defence. The chapter titled “Self Defence Considerations” is perhaps the greatest chapter on self-defence in any martial arts book and I have created our seven tips from that source material: 1. Self-Defence Is Not Fun “You are liable to find yourself fighting hard to avoid serious injury and so must expect to be hurt.” I love this quote. Bruce shatters the illusions of anyone who is training self-defence like it is a pyjama party. Yes, he is so right, you will be fighting hard and only if you are lucky will you avoid severe injury.If you look around the web, you will see countless self-defence videos that look as if they are in some kind of video game.Self-defence is tough. It is great that Bruce recognised this, but so few still seem to be able to grasp this now. 2. Pay Absolutely No Attention To His Size, His Arrogance, Fierce Facial Contortions, Nor His Vicious Language. We see it all the time, men and women, who are keen on intimidating via looks. They stare, they dress in a certain way and of course, they are aiming to scare everyone. It is almost as if they gain strength via intimidation. The key is simple, as tough as this is to do; their appearance has absolutely nothing to do with their ability to fight
3. Size Is Never A True Indication Of Muscular Power And Efficiency. I think we know this one. Big guy with muscles and people get scared. However just because a person has a great physique, does not mean that they can use those muscles to inflict force. A great example of this is a recent video that went viral showing one of the world’s strongest men sparring against a lightweight boxer. Yes, size does matter but never judge a book by its cover.

Women Only Self-Defence Workshops, every Monday, 6

Women Only Self-Defence Workshops, every Monday, 6-7pm at Lopping Hall in Loughton. Our launch date is 10th June 2019 and the first session is FREE. In these regular weekly workshops you'll get the chance to learn the many aspects to effective self-protection.
As well as the usual blocking and counter striking drills, gouges, finger, wrist and arm locks, grabs, holds, escaping chokes & strangles, you'll also be taught awareness, de-escalation techniques, how to survive a knife attack, the law, reasonable force, pressure points and the science behind powerful strikes. We'll explore kickboxing drills to teach you the spontaneity needed in a street situation too. As usual, we'll any personal concerns about your safety in these workshops too. No karate suits needed.
